Social Blanket: the sum of its parts…, site specific installation for Jane Lackey: Points of Contact, GOCA 121, UCCS, Colorado Springs, Colorado 2015

Social Blanket, wood, polyester voile fabric, adhesive labels, markers, cups, clipboards, vinyl letters, 7 feet, 6.75 inches, x 12 feet, 6 inches x 6 feet, (bench), ink stain on oak plywood

Social Blanket is bordered by taut scrim walls isolating a quiet space for participation. A wall grid made of adhesive labels provides a forum for posting stripe patterns. My works incorporate signifiers unique to identity yet common to all—handwriting, opinions, communication, patterns, marks---acknowledging difference, anomaly, the assertion of self within a plaid of individuals.

The wall text invited viewers to sit on the bench and create a pattern using color markers. The suggestion was to overlay lines going across and up/down to make stripe or plaid designs. Blank adhesive labels were available on clipboards. Completed patterns were placed over a blank label on the wall to eventually add up to an overall grid of stripe patterns binding everyone who chose to participate.
